If you, like me, enjoy listening to a good audiobook while dozing off to dreamland, but don’t want to leave your computer running throughout the entire night…

NightTunes is for you!

No more harddisk clatter noise or blowing CPU fans disturbing your sleep …plus you’re reducing your your energy bill and your carbon footprint

Unlike other shutdown solutions, NightTunes does not depend on user-set timers to determine when to shutdown your PC. That way it is guaranteed that your computer won’t bail out on you right in the middle of your goodnight tale, only because you forgot to set the timer right.

Today I got AIM-Fish-Bot-ed (not that that verb exists). As Nixie explains in her article, Fish-Bots do exactely what you may have done as a child: call two total strangers, then hold the two phones together and listen in on how they accuse each other of doing a prank call. Only Fish-Bots do it via AIM or ICQ. While the whole thing seems to upset a lot of people, I found the idea hilarious and would love to read more chat protocols of “victims” Here’s mine (the first message is from the bot (RolyPolyCoho), the following come from the person I got connected to):

16:20:00 RolyPolyCoho
Greetings! I know this is hard to believe, but I’m you – from the future. I bear important news.
16:20:13 seboslaw
holy crap! How old are you….err…am I?
16:21:00 RolyPolyCoho
still didn’t answer my question
16:21:13 seboslaw
what question?
16:21:42 RolyPolyCoho
the question asking who are you?
16:22:07 seboslaw
well……if I believe you, I am you
16:22:49 RolyPolyCoho
whatever
16:23:20 seboslaw
whatever my ass….you said: Greetings! I know this is hard to believe, but I’m you – from the future. I bear important news.
16:23:31
so what’s the important news?
16:23:48
or do I know already? this me-you thing’s kinda confusing me
16:25:42
After some time I came across “Wrestling Obituaries” and was shocked to learn that most of the (former WWF) guys I watched doing their showy thingy on TV more than 20 years ago have already passed away, most of them due to heart attacks….in their mid-40s!!!. The following names rang some bells and brought back some childhood memories for me:

Jerry “Crusher” Blackwell–January 22, 1995–Died of complications from injuries sustained in a road accident.

To execute these commandments you’ll have to find the properly gifted fellows.”

@Stefan: ich hoffe, Du kannst damit was anfangen!

Update 3: Auf http://www.wiki.argr.de/index.php5?title=Final_Mill_-_Trail werden Infos gesammelt.

Since I have two computers and regularly access my feeds from both, I found this to be the best solution. While Bloglines satisfied my needs at first, over time I got more and more upset with their interface. Clicking on a feed automatically marks ALL items in it as read, no matter whether you actually read them or not. So if you have a feed with an already fairly large amount of unread items in it, you better work through them at one go, otherwise you’ll loose some. Trying to bring back items that you couldn’t read (because you maybe clicked on another feed in-between) by setting the display option to display “All items” will do the thing, although then you will still have to determine on your own, which items you have or haven’t already read. This got me to the point where I postponed reading some of my feeds until I could spare the time of struggling through 300+ news items and over time this got worse and worse. In the end I always just clicked on the damn thing to get it over with (not having read a single line:-)

The second thing I really missed was a search capability that lets me search in any of my RSS feeds. Even when setting the feed’s display option to show “All Items”, that only gives you the last 100 items instead of ALL as the control’s caption might suggest.

Enter: Google Reader (GR).

I gotta say. I’m really impressed! Not only does GR present solutions and improvements for all of the weaknesses mentioned above, it also presents itself with a simple and intuitive interface. Clicking on a subscription actually gives you the whole feed…and I don’t mean 100 items, but the whole damn thing. The politics news cast of “Spiegel Online” for example is browsable back to Oct 2005. Upon opening a feed, GE pre-loads the first 20 items and then constantly streams in more, the further you scroll down. In contrary to Bloglines, items get automatically marked as read when you scroll by or click on them. This way you can actually read some updated items now and then continue dealing with any left unread items later. For me, the implemented full-text search, however, was the most determining factor when making the descision to switch to GR. Being able to search in RSS feeds makes information inquiry so much more uncomplicated. Although I can still mark or tag (or “star” as GR calls it) my feed items, at the moment I don’t actually feel like I need to anymore since retrieving them is so simple now.

What more can I say…try it yourself.

Yesterday I wrote about Gmail’s introduction of IMAP. After fiddling around with it a little I must say that I’m not impressed by their IMAP implementation of the tagging system, or “labels” as they call it. On the client side the labels are represented by individual folders, one for each label. So if I want to tag one of my e-mails with “work”, “php” and “project”, I simply create 3 folders with the appropriate names and put a COPY of my mail into each one. Although Gmail lets you nest these folders, I wonder what my Outlook will look like in about a year….thousands of folders….

And if you think that is a real downsite, think again: During synchronization between Gmail and your client program, the mail from above (labled with “work”, “php” and “project”) is downloaded 3 (in words THREE) times, one time for each folder. Even if you try to circumvent this by labeling your mails with solely one tag, your .pst file will be bloated to twice the size because each mail resides within the label (-folder) AND by default the “All mails”-folder.

One workaround is to let your client download only the headers of unimportant mails, although I prefer having a hard copy of my mails on my HD. I guess removing the mails from the inbox will cut the local disk usage of the .pst file in half (you still have all your mail in the “All mails” folder). But then again, the “All mails” folder contains ALL your mails, including the ones you sent, so it is kinda messy.

I hope Google will do something about this.

Finally!!! GMail now supports IMAP, which ends the era of endless “forwarding chains” of connected GMail accounts. In the end I had 5 different accounts (each of which forwared a copy of the incoming mail to the next one), one for each computer/device I wanted to POP my mails onto. Fortunately, the people from GMail heard all the crying.

However, IMAP has not been enabled for all users yet, which is supposed to take another week or so. If you’re blessed already, you can logon to your GMail account and then go to “Settings->Forwarding and POP/IMAP” to enable IMAP….oh and as of yet you have to set the interface language of your GMail account to “English (US)” for the IMAP options to appear. If the tab still only shows “Forwarding and POP” you just have to wait a little bit longer or you didn’t change the i-face language correctly.

In your mail client, GMail’s labels are supported by folders (e.g. your label “old-mail” corresponds to a subfolder “old-mail” of your root-GMail-IMAP-folder). If you want to tag a mail with multiple lables in your client, simply copy the mail to all the corresponding (sub-)folders.

Deleting mails proved to be a little bit trickier than expected. If you want to delete a message for good, you will have to move the mail to the “Trash” folder. Deleting it the usual way (pressing the delete key or choosing “delete” from the right-click context menu) will only remove the mail’s labels and the mail itself will still be present in the “All Mail” folder (cf. here). In Outlook for example the mail will be crossed out as usual on deletion, but if you then try to purge all marked elements, nothing will happen.
